Choose headsets for testing day

Match the selected model to your testing devices and assessment requirements, then plan spares and classroom quantities.

Match the connector

Use 3.5mm for most Chromebooks and laptops, USB-A for older computers, and USB-C for newer iPads and Chromebooks without a headphone jack. Check each device model before ordering.

Choose the right microphone

Speaking tests record student answers, so an adjustable boom microphone gives clearer recordings than an in-line mic. Run your test platform's microphone check on a few devices first.

Plan spares and hygiene

Order about 10% extra for broken or forgotten headsets. Label each headset by student or seat, and clean shared headsets between students.

Testing headsets FAQ

Which tests need a headset with a microphone?

Tests with spoken answers, such as the WIDA ACCESS Speaking test and the ELPAC Speaking domain, and any student using speech-to-text. Most other state tests need headphones only. See our headsets for language assessments for speaking-test options.

Can students use Bluetooth headsets for testing?

In most states, no. Many testing platforms advise against Bluetooth because a headset can pair with a phone as well as the test device. Some states allow it with conditions, so confirm your state's current testing guidance. Every headset in this collection is wired.

Should we choose USB or 3.5mm?

Both are widely accepted by testing platforms. Choose the connector your testing devices have. Some USB headsets need a driver on Windows, so test one on your actual devices before a bulk order.

Will these work on Chromebooks and iPads?

Most Chromebooks work with 3.5mm headsets, and newer iPads need USB-C. Low-cost USB-C adapters can cause audio lag or dropouts, so a native USB-C headset is usually more reliable.

Why does the volume not change during the test?

Many secure test browsers lock the device volume once the test starts. Turn the volume up before launching the test, and choose a headset with an in-line volume control when you can.

Can our school request a quote and use a purchase order?

Yes. Learning Headphones accepts purchase orders from schools and districts. Share your preferred products, testing devices, and quantities through the quote page for help preparing your order.
